ABOUT WIEN:

Wien is the capital of the Republic of Austria and by far the largest city in Austria with its population of more than 1.7 million. As you’d expect it’s Austria’s cultural, economic, and political centre. As the former home of the Habsburg court and its various empires, the city still has the trappings of the imperial capital it once was, and the historic city centre is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Visitors can not leave without having first tasted the two culinary specialties of the city: Sacher Torte (the original one at Sacher Hotel) and Wiener Schnitzel (the best is at Filgmüller).

Lonely Planet’s writer Catherine Le Nevez tells about Wien: “With its rambling palaces, winding cobbled lanes, elegant Kaffeehäuser (coffee houses) and cosy wood-panelled Beisln (bistro pubs), Vienna is steeped in history. Yet it’s also at the cutting edge of design, architecture, contemporary art, and new directions in drinking and dining. What I love most about the city is that not only does it hold on to its traditions, it incorporates them in everything from high-fashion Dirndls with pop-art motifs or punk conical studs to handmade Sacher Torte–flavoured doughnuts and inspired neo-retro cafes. Vienna’s past is alive in its present, and, by extension, its future.

THE TOWN: Lonely’s writer Tom O’Malley tell us why he loves so much this town: “I love how Běijīng wears its many faces like opera masks. In winter, the lakes freeze as chill winds whip south from beyond the Great Wall, carrying with them the echo of Manchu rule. Come summer, Běijīng is all rolled-up t-shirts, icy beers and street-side lamb skewers. Then there’s government Běijīng, where socialist flowerbeds espouse civic harmony, factories power down and the sky beams a proud blue. Or melting-pot Běijīng, defined by the millions of migrants who make the capital tick. And lastly, my Běijīng. Of moonlit bike rides when the city sleeps, of breezy cafes and culinary quests, and wild rambles up among the Great Wall watchtowers.”

THE TOWN: Washington, D.C. is the capital of the United States. Named in honor of President George Washington, the City of Washington was founded in 1791 to serve as the new national capital. The metropolitan area, of which the District is the principal city, has a population of over 6 million, the sixth-largest metropolitan statistical area in the country.

Lonely Planet‘s writer Karla Zimmerman explains why she loves this town: “It begins with the Mall. How sweet is it to have a walkable strip of museums where you can see nuclear missiles, cursed diamonds and exquisite Asian ceramics in cool underground galleries – for free? Further down the path the notes and photos people leave at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial will break your heart, and the Lincoln Memorial just kills with its grandness and sweeping view. Shaw wins my affection for its neighborhoody beer halls and cafes. Most of all, I love how Ben’s Chili Bowl makes you feel like a local even if you’re not.”

Lonely Planet introducing Newport with these words: Established by religious moderates, ‘new port’ flourished in the independent colony of Rhode Island, which declared itself a state here in 1776. Downtown, shutterbugs snap excitedly at immaculately preserved Colonial-era architecture and landmarks at seemingly every turn.

Fascinating as Newport’s early history is, the real intrigue began in the late 1850s, when wealthy industrialists began building opulent summer residences along cliff-top Bellevue Ave. Impeccably styled on Italianate palazzos, French châteaux and Elizabethan manor houses, these gloriously restored mansions filled with priceless antiques and their breathtaking location must be seen to be believed. Eastbourne – Grass specialists are ready to stand in the heart of East Sussex

THE TOURNAMENT: ATP 250 Aegon International

From 06/26 to 07/01

Surface: Grass outdoor

Prize money: € 693,910

Tournament location: Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club College Road, Eastbourne, East Sussex BN21 4JA, United Kingdom

Uruguaian Pablo Cuevas will lead the entry list of the tournament

Entry list: Pablo Cuevas (Uru) – John Isner (Usa) – Steve Johnson (Usa) – Richard Gasquet (Fra) – Gilles Muller (Lux) – Sam Querrey (Usa) – Mischa Zverev (Ger) – Feliciano Lopez (Esp) – Diego Schwartzman (Arg) – Bernard Tomic (Aus)

THE TOWN: Eastbourne is a large town, seaside resort and borough in the non-metropolitan county of East Sussex on the south coast of England, 19 miles east of Brighton. With a seafront consisting largely of Victorian hotels, a pier and a Napoleonic era fort and military museum, it is on of the most known seaside resort of Britain.

For Lonely Planet: “Despite its official title as ‘Britain’s sunniest town’, Eastbourne has been slow to throw off its unattractive image as death’s waiting room by the chilly Channel, all snoozing octogenarians in deckchairs and fusty guesthouses populated by vitamin D–deprived bank-holidaying Scots. But while much of this is still to be found here, in the last decade or so an influx of students and the arrival of the southeast’s largest Polish community have given the town a sprightlier feel.

Eastbourne’s 3.5-mile sweeping, palm-tree-lined seafront is one of the UK’s grandest. Add to this a fresh modern art gallery and the recently created South Downs National Park that nudges its western suburbs and Eastbourne certainly makes an enjoyable day trip from London or Brighton. It’s also the start and end point for a hike along the 100-mile South Downs Way.”

Entry list: Stan Wawrinka (Sui) – John Isner (Usa) – Albert Ramos Vinolas (Esp) – Sam Querrey (Usa) – Steve Johnson (Usa) – Joao Sousa (Por) – Paolo Lorenzi (Ita) – Viktor Troicki (Srb) – Robin Haase (Ned) – Ryan Harrison (Usa)

THE TOWN: Geneva is the second most populous city in Switzerland (after Zürich) and is the most populous city of Romandy, the French-speaking part of Switzerland. Situated where the Rhône exits Lake Geneva, it is a global city, a financial center, and worldwide center for diplomacy due to the presence of numerous international organizations, including the headquarters of many of the agencies of the United Nations and the Red Cross. Geneva is also one of the most expensive city in the world.

Lonely Planet introduces this town with these words: “Sleek, slick and cosmopolitan, Geneva is a rare breed of city: it’s among Europe’s priciest, its people chatter in every language and it’s constantly perceived as the Swiss capital (it isn’t). Superbly strung around the shores of Europe’s largest Alpine lake, Switzerland’s second-largest city has only half the population of Zürich; yet the whole world is here: 200-odd governmental and nongovernmental international organisations fill Geneva’s plush hotels, feast on its international cuisine and help prop up its famed overload of banks, luxury jewellers and chocolate shops.

But where’s the urban grit? Not in the lakeside’s silky-smooth promenades and iconic fountain of record-breaking heights, nor in its pedestrian Old Town. To find the rough cut of the diamond, dig into the Pâquis quarter or walk along the Rhône’s industrial shores where local neighbourhood bars hum with attitude. This is the Geneva of the Genevois…or as close as you’ll get to it.”

How to get: Houston downtown is far from River Oaks Cc just 4 miles and 11 minutes driving. Courts are far just 14 miles from William P.Hobby Airport.

Recent former champions: 2016 Juan Monaco – 2015 Jack Sock – 2014 Fernando Verdasco – 2013 John Isner – 2012 Juan Monaco – 2011 Ryan Sweeting – 2010 Juan Ignacio Chela – 2009 Leyton Hewitt – 2008 Marcel Granollers – 2007 Ivo Karlovic

Nr.1 of the seeding and former 2015 champion Jack Sock

Entry list: Jack Sock (Usa) – John Isner (Usa) – Steve Johnson (Usa) – Feliciano Lopez (Esp) – Fernando Verdasco (Esp) – Sam Querrey (Usa) – Donald Young (Usa) – Adrian Mannarino (Fra) – Thomaz Bellucci (Bra) – Juan Monaco (Arg)

THE TOWN: Houston is the most populous city in the state of Texas and the fourth-most populous city in the United States. Nicknamed the “Space City”, it is a global city, with strengths in business, international trade, entertainment, culture, media, fashion, science, sports, technology, education, medicine, and research. The city has a population from various ethnic and religious backgrounds and a large and growing international community. Houston is the most diverse city in Texas and has been described as the most diverse in the United States. It is home to many cultural institutions and exhibits, which attract more than 7 million visitors a year to the Museum District. Houston has an active visual and performing arts scene in the Theater District and offers year-round resident companies in all major performing arts.

Lonely Planet writes: “Think laid-back, pickup truck and boot-scooting town meets high-powered, high-cultured and high-heeled metropolis. During the day, chill out in your flip-flops, take in museums and shopping, then hit happy hour on a leaf-shaded deck. At night, revel in culinary or cultural bliss – the foodie scene and theater district are both nationally renowned. Sure, oil-and-gas wealth underlies a lot of the city’s endeavors, but you’d never know it from the lack of pretension. What’s not to like about a place where a weeks-long rodeo and barbecue cook-off is the favorite reason for stepping out? Here starched jeans are de rigeur in all but the very fanciest of restaurants.

Houston may rank behind Chicago as the nation’s fourth most populated city, but it covers a greater area than all of New Jersey. Diverse residential neighborhoods and enclaves of restaurants and shops spread far and wide. You’ll miss out if you limit yourself to Downtown. The leafy Museum District is the city’s cultural center; Upper Kirby and River Oaks have upscale shopping and dining; Montrose contains cute bungalows, quirky shops and eateries; Midtown has up-and-coming condos and some good restaurants; Washington Ave is nightlife central and the Heights has historic homes and boutiques. Don’t forget that a couple of the town’s main attractions – NASA’s Space Center Houston in Clear Lake and Galveston Island – are outside the city limits, requiring a 45-minute drive down I-45.”

THE TOWN: Acapulco is the original Mexican resort town. Still, it remains a major destination and a worthwhile trip and is the number two Mexican spring break destination among U.S. college students. Lonely Planet writes about it:

Acapulco was Mexico’s original party town, with a stunning topography of soaring cliffs curling into a series of wide bays and intimate coves, fringed with sandy beaches and backed by jungle-green hills. It was dubbed the ‘Pearl of the Pacific’ during its heyday as a playground for the rich and famous, including Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Elizabeth Taylor and Judy Garland. John F Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline honeymooned here, and it was immortalized in films such as Elvis’ Fun in Acapulco and TV’s The Love Boat.

Acapulco remains gorgeous, though overdeveloped. Worse, the city’s reputation has been tarnished by years of violent battles in Mexico’s ongoing drug wars. Despite the frightening homicide statistics, the violence is largely confined to internecine gang struggles for supremacy. International tourism has plummeted, but the city remains comparatively safe to visit. It still offers plenty of atmosphere and charm, with romantic cliffside restaurants, VW Beetle taxis, an impressive 17th-century fort, a world-class botanical garden, cliff divers and the old town’s charming shady zócalo. And when you tire of the crowds, secluded beaches such as Pie de la Cuesta are just a short trip away.

THE TOWN: Auckland is the most populous urban area in New Zeland. Auckland has a population of 1,495,000, which constitutes 32 percent of country’s population. In 2014 Mercer Quality of Living Survey ranked Auckland 3rd place in the world on its list. For Lonely Planet:”The greater Auckland region encompasses the city proper and the gorgeous surrounding towns and landscapes.

It’s rare that visitors restrict themselves solely to the city area. And why would you? There’s plenty to see and do right in the heart of the city, but travelling further afield opens the opportunities considerably. You can’t miss getting out onto the waters of the Haruki Gulf and exploring its many islands. One of the closest to the mainland is Waiheke Island, home to emerald waters and world-class wineries. Further north lies Goat Island Marine Reserve, a thriving and accessible aquatic ecosystem.

The natural delights on offer go beyond the area’s beautiful waters. Rainforests, thermal springs, sprawling parks and volcanic cones are just the start.

ABOUT STOCKHOLM

Stockholm, one of the most beautiful capitals in the world, is built on 14 islands connected by 57 bridges. The beautiful buildings, the greenery, the fresh air and the proximity to the water are distinctive traits of this city. Ekoparken, the first National City Park in the world, is a green space that breathes for the city, and a constant presence in the crush of the city. Lonely Planet writes about Stockholm: “Stockholm’s good looks and fashion sense could almost be intimidating. But this city is an accessible beauty, as easy to explore as it is to love. Though spread across 14 islands, connected by 57 bridges, it is compact and walkable. Each neighbourhood has a distinct character, yet they’re so close together you can easily spend time in several areas. In each, you’ll find trend-setting design, inventive cuisine, unbeatable museums, great shopping, pretty parks and loads of atmosphere.

The old town, Gamla Stan, is one of Europe’s most arresting historic hubs, all storybook buildings, imposing palaces and razor-thin cobblestone streets.

Just a few metres from this time capsule, the modern city centre shines like the pages of a magazine. Downtown is a catwalk, showroom and test kitchen. Everything here is the very latest thing.

And it’s surrounded by pristine forests and a vast archipelago. What’s not to love?
